Can You Stop a Rollformer During Forming?

Yes. Normally no effect can be detected on the section produced. In fact, we frequently use the rollformer as a ‘roll feed’, stopping to incorporate punching, notching and shearing or cropping within the one machine.
 

How Do You Feed a Rollformer?

  • From pre-cut blank: -
    1. By hand
    2. By feed table from a previous operation
    3. By de-stacker (pick & place)
  • From slit to width coil mounted on a decoiler.
 

What Governs the Size of Rollformer?

  • The product form height dictates the vertical and horizontal roll centres.
  • The profile complexity and metal edge movement dictates the number of forming stations.
 

What is Rollforming?

The forming of a profile shape by passing a flat strip or coil through a number of pairs of rollers, each pair progressively forming the bend until the desired cross section is achieved.
 

What is the Minimum Length That Can Be Rollformed?

Normally 2 x horizontal roll pitch. This can be reduced to 1 x roll pitch + 3mm by incorporating inter station guides. If the profile is sheared on exit from the rollformer, no minimum length exists.
 

What Material Thickness Can Be Rollformed?

Typically, gauges between 0.25mm and 3.00mm present no problems although we have formed down to 0.08mm with great success.
 

What Materials Can Be Rollformed?

Any suitable ductile material that will take a 180º bend without splitting: -
 
Mild steel, galvanised mild steel, zintec, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass, pre-paint steel and plastic coated steel have all been rollformed successfully.
 

What Speed Can You Rollform?

The speed is normally restricted by external factors of handling and related processes to between 15 and 30 metres per minute, but speeds of 100+ metres per minute are possible.
 

Why Use Rollforming?

It is a fast, cost-effective method of producing any complexity of profile of a limitless length in a single pass, thus saving on man-hours.
 

Will the section be Consistent?

The section is governed by the accurately machined profile of hardened steel rollers and the setting of hardened infeed guides. These do not vary from one product to the next and hence give consistent sections for a given material thickness. Tolerances of +- 0.2mm are common.
